Omega-3s: The Batman of the Body?

Here's what they said in this article (link to full content posted below):

“[Other] studies, along with our observations, suggest that omega-3 PUFA supplementation may play an important role in preventing weight gain and improving weight loss when omega-3 PUFA are supplemented concomitantly with a structured weight-loss programme.”

But when you look at the study, the results are not on the same planet with those comments.

Here's what actually happened. Researchers took blood from a bunch of people, and then measured how much Omega-3 Fatty Acids they had on board. They next looked to see who had the best health status, weight, etc.

The people with higher Omega-3 FAs on board had lower weight. This may be because Omega-3 FAs are physiological fat fighters, like batman for the body, warding off the evil fat molecules, and if we just had more of those in our blood, well, then the problems would be solved.

Alternatively, it may mean that the people who tend to eat better also tend to have more Omega-3 FAs, and also tend to control their weight. In this case, the data mean that you need to eat well, control portions, and get off the couch.

Finally, what the data do not say or suggest or even flirt with is the possibility that supplementation with Omega-3 FA pills might have any connection to low weight -- unless, of course, it does turn out to be the body's Batman.

Healthcare stalls

The US Senate will not get a version of the healthcare reform
legislation completed before the August break. And that us probably a
great thing, to have a delay to let everyone get a better sense of
this critical debate. The link to the full article is here:

http://m.apnews.com/ap/db_16026/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=NbV9TmW8

In fact, it is incumbant on the republicans to take this time to come
back to the table with a credible alternative: not a legislative straw
man that has no prayer of being adopted in any form, but ways to meet
in the middle.

The dems need to settle on a version they can come together around,
and to do so in a way that does not become a fiscal liability down the
road.

Healthcare costs are hurting us, financially, and should not be seen
as an "opportunity" to Break Baraks Back, politically. Nor should it
be rammed down anyone's throat. There is a middle ground.

So that the Senate didn't get their bill through by the August recess
is a good thing. This problem is so big and so important that we have
to make sure it is done right.

Reid: No health care vote in Senate until fall

Healthcare Astrology

Are the stars truly aligning? It seems that way, although the question is going to be, what is the constellation that these stars form?

We hope that promises to hold down coats without degrading the service we receive are borne out. At the very least, once the final form of the bill is through, we will be able to apply pressure on whatever administration is in, to continually improve it over time.

No Firm Evidence Green Tea Helps Prevent Cancer

Bummer. Another home remedy bites the dust. Check out this report of the report of the reports. After reviewing a gazillion studies, the data are mixed and weird.

The whole article is here, but the bottom line is this. There's no magic thing ... be it green tea or bee pollen ... that's going to protect you from a life out of balance.

Look. Green tea is likely good for you, but to be taken in the context of a healthy lifestyle. It's the combination of real foods like green tea with activity, etc., that will best prevent chronic disease.

We win

We are changing the culture of health for the better. This Witchita
plant will stop producing hydrogenated oils!

The reason? Lower demand because consumers are demanding higher
quality foods. In other words, our demand is creating their supply.

You should feel empowered by this! Great job, and keep choosing
healthy foods and driving the market toward a better culture of health!

Obama Full Court Press on Healthcare Reform

Obama applies Full Court Press to pass healthcare reform. Bush tried that on Soc Sec reform and lost big. He's walking a fine line and needs to find a middle ground before the internal bickering and hand wringing grind progress to a halt.

By Michael D. Shear and Shailagh Murray

Six months into his presidency, Barack Obama may have no greater test of his ability to translate personal popularity into a successful legislative agenda than the upcoming two weeks.
