Radio Show Today: HCG is a scam

On my radio program today (wmny http://www.wmnyradio.com/business_of_health.aspx, Saturdays at noon), I'm talking with Dr Pieter Cohen about the HCG diet.

It is amazing what people will do to themselves, and what they will believe, to lose weight.

HCG is a pregnancy placenta hormone
Human chorionic gonadotropin or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is a pregnancy hormone made by the embryo and later by the placenta.

If you have it, that may indicate testicular cancer
The β subunit of HCG is secreted by many cancers. Thus, if you have this in your blood, it means that you may have a cancer growing in your body. In particular, it can be a positive test for testicular cancer.

HCG can make you ovulate
When not being injected into people desperate to lose weight, HCG is extensively used to make women ovulate.

As a weight loss method, HCG doesn't actually work
A meta analysis found that studies supporting hCG for weight loss were of poor methodological quality and concluded that "there is no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in the treatment of obesity; it does not bring about weight-loss or fat-redistribution, nor does it reduce hunger or induce a feeling of well-being".

HCG Diet Side Effects

Some side effects of the HCG Diet include a loss of your menstrual period, hair loss and mood swings.

HCG Diet Causes Cancer

Could there be a link between Cancer and the HCG Diet.  She said that if someone has a pre-existing cancer that is hormone reactive.

Weight gain increases with added sugars intake, data suggests

Weight gain increases with added sugars intake, data suggests

Trends in weight gain have paralleled trends in intake of added sugars, according to a review of 27 years of Minnesota Heart Survey data presented at an American Heart Association (AHA) event.

The researchers, from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, found that consumption of added sugars increased for men and women in all age groups from 1982 to 2009, according to the survey data, and trends were parallel to increases in body mass index (BMI).
According to this report: “Although other lifestyle factors should be considered as an explanation for the upward trend of BMI, public health efforts should advise limiting added sugar intake."
Sugar-sweetened beverages are the largest contributor of added sugars in the US diet. Current guidelines from the American Heart Association specify that calories coming from added sugars should be limited to about 100 per day for women and 150 per day for men in order to reduce heart disease risk – about five percent of total daily calorie intake.

Are Farm Raised Fish Good For You? See the VIDEO w Dr Clower

We are eating more fish than ever.

But it's confusing, too, with SOME reports telling how heart-healthy they are ... and OTHER reports telling you how this "Chicken of the Sea" harbors the PCB pesticides that are  absolutely terrible for you!!

How are we supposed to know??

Even though this interview (below) is not exhaustive (we only had 6 minutes!!), I do stress which fish are the best, and which are the ones we should be concerned about.

Looking forward to your thoughts.
